METCALFE'S SENTRY |
Metcalfe Sentry Foods is a fourth-generation family business founded in 1917 by Henry and Teresa Hess. Today, Metcalfe's in Wauwatosa and Madison is owned by Hess's descendants, Tim and Kevin Metcalfe. The company has a long history of community involvement. The family has long organized and sponsored “The World’s Largest Brat Fest," which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities. The stores are now known for supporting local food through their "Food Miles" program. Signs displayed all over the store indicate how many miles the product traveled before landing on a shelf, which provides a way for customers to identify and choose local food. The program has earned recognition, including a Best of Madison Business award for co-owner Tim Metcalfe from Madison Magazine in January. In February, Metcalfe's won a Creative Choice Award from the National Growers Association.
